Bill linked to environment set for parlt

MINISTER of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change John Pundari will present a bill for an Act in relation to the Ok Tedi Mine to provide protection of the environment.

The notice, read by Clerk Vela Konivaro in Parliament on Wednesday, is in line with the fourth national goals and directive principles of the constitution that deals with national resources and the environment.

When passed, the bill will regulate the environment impacts of development activities in order to promote sustainable development of the environment and economic, social and physical wellbeing of the people impacted.

It will also safeguard the life supporting capacity of air, water, soil and eco-system for present and future generations to avoid remedying and mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environment to provide for the protection of the environment from further harm.

Pundari will also present a bill for an Act to amend the Conservation and Environment Protection Act 2014.

Commerce and Industry Minister Wera Mori will present a bill for an Act to provide for regulatory framework for foreign investments in the interest of national, social and economic development and to establish a body known as the Foreign Investment Regulatory Authority to define its powers and functions.

Mori will also present another bill for an Act to provide for the registration of a franchise, establish the office of the registrar to regulate and monitor the operation of the franchise and establish the franchise advisory board to assist the State.

He will also present a bill for an Act to amend the Investment Promotion Act 1992 in relation to foreign investments.

Health and HIV/AIDS Minister Sir Puka Temu will present a bill for an Act to provide for the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear energy and ironising radiation to regulate and control activities, practices and facilities, with the aim of protecting individuals, society and the environment from the harmful effects of nuclear energy and ironising radiation.

The bill is give effect to the safeguarding agreement and the treaty on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons (non-proliferation treaty) entered into force on Oct 13, 1983, in ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Sir Puka will also present a bill for an Act to amend the National Institute of Standard and Industrial Technology Amendment Act 1993 to confer additional powers and functions to the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology to regulate and control the use of nuclear and ironising radiation with the aim of protecting individuals, society and the environment.
